SUGAR IS PRODUCED IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS
SUGAR IS PRODUCED NATURALLY IN SUGAR BEET
STAGE 1: GROWN AND DELIVERED
- 1.Sugar beet is grown in East Anglia and the East Midlands. Sown in the spring, it grows through the summer ready to be harvested in autumn and winter.
- 2.The harvested crop travels on average 28 miles to one of our four advanced manufacturing plants in Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark or Wissington.
- 3.When it arrives on site, the sugar beet is washed.
SUGAR IS EXTRACTED,FILTERED AND CRYSTALLISED
STAGE 2: AT THE PROCESSING STAGE
- 4.The sugar beet is sliced into thin strips called cossettes.
- 5.These thin strips are mixed with hot water to extract the sugar and a lime solution is added to the raw juice to remove any impurities.
- 6.The syrup is filtered, heated and seeded with tiny sugar crystals, which grow into the required size. The sugar crystals are then washed, dried and cooled.
-
